Milestone of the Energy Transition: AFS Connects Large-Scale Battery Storage System in Hamm-Uentrop to the Grid
The energy transition requires more than vision – it requires powerful grids, precise engineering, and experienced specialists. In Hamm-Uentrop, on the site of the former Westfalen power plant, one of the largest battery storage systems in Germany has been realized. A project actively shaping the future of energy supply.
220 Megawatts of Power for Grid Stability
The modern battery storage facility provides an output of 220 megawatts and a storage capacity of 235 megawatt hours. This makes the plant a key contributor to grid stabilization and the integration of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power.
Large-scale storage systems of this size are essential building blocks for a secure, flexible, and sustainable energy infrastructure. They balance peak loads, absorb surplus electricity, and feed it back into the grid when needed – quickly, efficiently, and reliably.
Grid Connection by AFS Kabelmontagen
In 2025, AFS Kabelmontagen successfully connected the RWE battery storage system to the grid. As a specialist in grid construction, cable installation, and energy infrastructure, we take on key responsibilities in projects of this scale, particularly in the field of electrical connection.
Connecting a battery storage system to the grid requires the highest level of precision, strict compliance with standards, and a well-coordinated team. From project coordination and technical implementation to commissioning, quality, safety, and reliability were our top priorities.
With decades of experience in low-, medium-, and high-voltage systems as well as conventional cable civil engineering, we reliably deliver complex energy infrastructure projects throughout Germany – from a single source.
Expansion Already in Planning
Development at the Hamm-Uentrop site is not yet complete. RWE is already preparing an expansion of the facility. This will further increase the importance of the site for Germany’s energy supply – and the demand for high-performance grid infrastructure.
Large battery storage systems are a key component in the transformation of our energy system. They connect generation and consumption, renewable sources and industrial users, stability and future readiness.
Infrastructure for the Energy of Tomorrow
As an experienced company in grid construction, we approach energy infrastructure holistically – from planning and cable civil works to precise cable installation. Projects like the battery storage system in Hamm-Uentrop demonstrate how technically sound execution and strong partnerships are essential for the success of the energy transition.
AFS Kabelmontagen connects powerful infrastructure with the energy of tomorrow.
We connect the future.
