The energy transition is not determined by solar modules alone – it is secured by reliable infrastructure. Only a properly engineered and professionally executed grid connection makes renewable generation projects economically viable and operationally stable.
For a ground-mounted photovoltaic system with more than 6.3 megawatt-peak (MWp) in Oelde, Germany, AFS Kabelmontagen GmbH was responsible for the complete realization of the grid connection – from route planning to connection to the 10-kilovolt medium-voltage network.
Technically Demanding Implementation Under Challenging Conditions
One of the key challenges of this project was the crossing of sensitive infrastructure in the railway area. To avoid any disruption to rail operations, two controlled horizontal directional drillings (HDD) were carried out along the railway tracks.
Project Key Data:
-
Two controlled HDD drillings along the railway corridor
-
Total drilling length: approx. 800 meters
-
No interference with railway traffic
-
No rerouting or operational interruptions required
By using modern trenchless drilling technology, the cable route was installed without impacting traffic or existing infrastructure. Planning, surveying, and execution were carried out under strict safety and regulatory requirements.
1,250 Meters of Cable Route to the Medium-Voltage Grid
In addition to the specialized drillings, a cable route totaling approximately 1,250 meters was constructed up to the 10 kV grid connection point.
The scope of work included:
-
Professional cable civil engineering
-
Medium-voltage cable installation
-
Standards-compliant routing and protection systems
-
Precise coordination of all construction phases under full operational conditions
Despite complex site conditions, the project was delivered on schedule and executed with technical precision.
Grid Connection as a Critical Success Factor
Large-scale photovoltaic systems place significant demands on grid capacity, routing, and electrical safety. The grid connection is not a secondary task – it is a decisive component of project success.
Insufficient coordination, inadequate route planning, or imprecise execution can delay or economically compromise energy projects. This is where the expertise of AFS Kabelmontagen makes the difference.
With comprehensive experience in:
-
Cable installation up to 110 kV
-
Medium-voltage grid connections
-
Cable civil works
-
Horizontal directional drilling (HDD)
-
Coordination of complex infrastructure projects
AFS reliably delivers technically demanding energy infrastructure solutions across Germany.
Infrastructure for a Stable Energy Future
The project in Oelde clearly demonstrates that the success of renewable energy installations depends largely on high-performance and precisely executed grid infrastructure.
AFS Kabelmontagen stands for solutions where standard approaches are not sufficient – for projects where experience, technology, and responsibility truly matter.
Grid connection is not a by-product.
It is the key to reliable energy supply.
